Common Cures For Insomnia - my take
Sep 7, 2007 Insomnia
I recently read an article that gave some of the common cures for insomnia and sleeping problems. While they certainly work for many people, they don’t always work for everyone, namely me.
Here’s some reasons why:
1. Your bedroom should only be used for sleeping and sex.
Probably sound advice. That means no TV, no reading, no handheld games, no eating. Sounds like no fun to me.
But creating a restful atmosphere is important to getting a good nights sleep.
Wait a minute!! Sex is okay?? When was the last time you had “restful” sex?? And if you did, might I recommend a new partner?
And what about the theory of no vigorous exercise right before bedtime??
The whole thing sounds pretty contradictory to me. Let’s try another one…
2. Your bedroom should be completely dark.
Actually, this one makes sense. There have been studies done about insomnia and the role that natural light in your eyes play. Specifically, the idea of getting lots of daytime sunshine (versus the flourescent bulb variety) first thing in the morning and then sleeping in total darkness. Apparently this worked for our cavemen ancestors.
However, practically speaking, this may be a problem if you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Tripping over a dog or bumping into furniture will not help your sleeping patterns. Of course, being able to look at your lit LCD clock every hour on the hour isn’t a good idea either.
Perhaps a good compromise might be a small night light in the bathroom. That keeps your bedroom pretty dark yet still helps you navigate should you need it.
3. Flipping your mattress and getting a new pillow.
Also, probably sound advice. If you are wearing a dent in one side of the bed, flipping your mattress or investing in a comfortable pillow is a good idea. As an insomniac, I would like to think this helps, but it’s been my experience that I can’t sleep ANYWHERE! I’ve had hard mattresses, soft, waterbeds, latex pillows, contour pillows, all kinds of pillows and although they may help temporarily, they are hardly a cure for insomnia.
