I'm a psychologist who teaches hand warming and thermal biofeedback. The answer to your question is, no, you can't just warm your hands or feet through external means (such as gloves and socks or an electric blanket). The physiological process of hand warming through biofeedback brings your warm blood to your extremities, which then *cools* your inner core of your body, which then signals your body that it is time to sleep! Ah-h-h!

I have insomnia and have to take something to help me sleep. I wonder if I take a hot shower before I go to sleep and jump right in bed will I be able to sleep. My hands and feet will still be warm or I could turn on my electric blanket low and warm them up. I'm going to try it and see if it will help. Boy I sure hope so.

I don't know about warming hands-being too hot is one of many things that always prevented me from sleeping. I've got a funny little blog about it at http://battlinginsomnia.blogspot.com
